XCOM: Chimera Squad, which Firaxis only just announced, was pitched as a smaller-scale, standalone title. Fans rightly didn’t expect all their favourite features from XCOM 2 to return. This is mostly true; Chimera Squad gets rid of perma-death, for instance, but some things never change. One of those being Ironman mode, which prevents players from save-scumming by overwriting their save file every time a move is made. Ironman is the game’s ultimate difficulty, because it’s where losses can truly be catastrophic. Firaxis confirmed to USgamer that Ironman mode will be there at launch. “Failing a mission in Ironman will result in restarting the game from the beginning, along with previous Ironman rules of having one ongoing save with no manual save/reload,” a Firaxis spokesperson said.
XCOM 2 was celebrated for its extensive mod support. Firaxis even invited community creators during development to ensure certain mods are supported from day one. The developer is also committed to modding in Chimera Squad. The game will likewise have the same modding features seen in XCOM 2. “Players can create their own enemies, characters, maps and other content to expand XCOM: Chimera Squad,” the spokesperson added. XCOM: Chimera Squad launches next Friday on PC.
