According to IGN Italy, Sony has confirmed that the next-gen console will not be able to natively play games at the recommended resolution on PC gaming monitors. The PlayStation 5 console will still work with the displays, but will either be forced to upscale content from 1080p resolution or downscale from 4K. Either way, 1440p won’t be supported by the console itself. Sony has a track record with this sort of thing; the manufacturer is infamous for not supporting non-standard definitions. Most recently, we saw the PlayStation 4 Pro have the same limitations when it came to 1440p… and that’s curious, because a lot of PS4 games actually run at that resolution. If you’re just playing your consoles via a TV, this won’t affect you. Typically 1440p monitors are what PC players gravitate towards to make sure they can enjoy good resolution without having to shell out for 4K setups. Still, the fact that Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X work with 1440p displays right out the box and the PlayStation 5 doesn’t may be a turn off for some – especially since you often see PC setups double as console rigs. It’s not all bad news, though; the PlayStation 5 actually has some really decent power behind it and can output a maximum of 8K resolution, or output 4K at 120fps via HDMI 2.1-compliant TVs, It can also – quite effortlessly – process a 1080p signal. It’s just 1440p that appears to be the problem. PlayStation 5 is set to release on either November 12 and 19, depending on where in the world you are.
