By comparison, last year’s Detective Pikachu reached $54.3 million during its opening weekend. Sonic’s whopping $57 million pull is based on a three day total, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film industry publication is currently projecting $68 million. Similarly, its opening day estimate of $21 million last Friday overtakes Detective Pikachu’s first day figure of $20.5 million in May 2019. This is Paramount’s best opening weekend since the release of Mission: Impossible - Fallout in summer 2018. The Sonic film was announced in 2014 under Sony Pictures before it was handed over to Paramount in 2017 after Sony backed out. This is impressive given how Sonic’s original reveal trailer so deeply horrified the internet. The outcry led to the character being given a makeover, thus delaying the film’s initial release date. Sonic’s redesign was accomplished by Tyson Hesse, the animation director for Sonic Mania’s cutscenes and director of the Sonic Mania Adventures animated series. Alas, despite its success in the box office Sonic the Hedgehog has gotten mixed reviews from critics. The film currently holds a 46 Metacritic rating as of press time.
